OPS · On-base plus slugging

What does OPS mean in softball?

OPS stands for on-base plus slugging. It adds a hitter's on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG) into one number that shows how often she gets on base and how much power she hits with.

How to calculate OPS

OPS = OBP + SLG

A hitter with a .420 on-base percentage and a .580 slugging percentage has an OPS of 1.000.

What's a good OPS?

In pro softball, an OPS around .800 is solid, .900 is very good, and 1.000 or higher is elite.

Good to know

  • OPS is popular because it rewards both getting on base (walks, hits, hit-by-pitch) and hitting for extra bases (doubles, triples, home runs).
  • It isn't perfect — it treats a point of OBP and a point of SLG as equal, even though getting on base is usually a bit more valuable — but it's the quickest single number for comparing hitters.
