SLG · Slugging percentage
What is slugging percentage in softball?
Slugging percentage (SLG) measures a hitter's power: total bases divided by at-bats. Singles count 1, doubles 2, triples 3, and home runs 4.
How to calculate SLG
SLG = (1B + 2×2B + 3×3B + 4×HR) ÷ AB
In 10 at-bats, a hitter with 2 singles, 1 double and 1 home run has 8 total bases — a .800 slugging percentage.
What's a good SLG?
In pro softball, .450 is solid, .550 is very good, and .650+ is elite power.
Good to know
- Despite the name, slugging isn't really a percentage — it's average bases per at-bat, so it can go above 1.000.
- Walks don't count toward slugging, which is why it's paired with OBP in OPS.
