Athletes Unlimited softball scoring

Athletes Unlimited built a league where the champion is a person, not a club. A running leaderboard tracks every athlete individually all season, and the player on top at the end wins it. Here is how those points are earned.

The three ways to score

  1. Win points — when your team wins an inning or wins the game. These are the big ones; they make up the large majority of a typical leaderboard score.
  2. Individual play — hits, steals and walks add points; pitchers gain for outs and lose for earned runs.
  3. MVP votes — players and fans vote three MVPs after every game.

Worked examples

A hitter who goes 3-for-5 with two singles and a home run but is caught stealing finishes at 50 points: 10 + 10 + 40 − 10.

A pitcher who throws 5⅔ innings and allows one earned run finishes at 58 points: 17 outs × 4, minus 10.

Extra innings

No individual points are earned in extra innings, and no new inning points are created — only the points that rolled over from tied innings are still on the table, plus the win points for the game.

Why the leaderboard decides the captains

In the individual-format seasons, teams are redrafted each series and the players sitting at the top of the leaderboard become captains and pick their own rosters. That is why win points matter so much: choosing the right side each week is the fastest route up the board.

Point values above reflect the scoring system Athletes Unlimited has published for its softball competitions. The league is the authority on current values — see the AUSL All-Star Cup format page. On Deck AUSL is an independent fan site and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the league.
