AVG · Batting average

What is batting average in softball?

Batting average (AVG) is hits divided by at-bats — the share of official at-bats that end in a hit.

How to calculate AVG

AVG = H ÷ AB

A hitter with 12 hits in 40 at-bats is batting .300.

What's a good AVG?

In pro softball, .280 is solid, .320 is very good, and .350+ is elite.

Good to know

  • Batting average ignores walks and treats every hit the same, so it's best read alongside OBP and SLG.
  • It's written as a three-digit decimal: .300 is said "three hundred."
