OBP · On-base percentage

What is on-base percentage in softball?

On-base percentage (OBP) is how often a hitter reaches base by a hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch, out of her plate appearances.

How to calculate OBP

OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)

A hitter with 10 hits, 4 walks and 1 HBP in 30 at-bats (1 sac fly) has an OBP of 15 ÷ 36 = .417.

What's a good OBP?

In pro softball, .350 is solid, .400 is very good, and .450+ is elite.

Good to know

  • OBP rewards patience — a walk is as good as a single for this stat.
  • Reaching on an error or fielder's choice does not count toward OBP.
