WHIP · Walks plus hits per inning pitched

What is WHIP in softball?

WHIP measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning: walks plus hits divided by innings pitched.

How to calculate WHIP

WHIP = (BB + H) ÷ IP

A pitcher who allows 20 hits and 8 walks in 28 innings has a WHIP of 1.00.

What's a good WHIP?

In pro softball, around 1.20 is solid, 1.00 is very good, and under 0.90 is elite.

Good to know

  • Lower is better — fewer baserunners means fewer chances to score.
  • WHIP doesn't count hit batters or runners who reach on errors.
