ERA · Earned run average

What is ERA in softball?

ERA (earned run average) is how many earned runs a pitcher allows per seven innings — softball uses seven because a regulation game is seven innings, not nine.

How to calculate ERA

ERA = (earned runs × 7) ÷ innings pitched

A pitcher who allows 6 earned runs in 28 innings has an ERA of 1.50.

What's a good ERA?

In pro softball, under 2.50 is good, under 2.00 is very good, and under 1.50 is elite.

Good to know

  • Earned runs exclude runs that score because of errors or passed balls.
  • Because softball ERA is scaled to 7 innings, it isn't directly comparable to baseball ERA.
