K/7 · Strikeouts per seven innings

What does K/7 mean in softball?

K/7 is a pitcher's strikeouts per seven innings — softball's version of baseball's K/9.

How to calculate K/7

K/7 = (strikeouts × 7) ÷ innings pitched

A pitcher with 40 strikeouts in 28 innings has a K/7 of 10.0.

What's a good K/7?

In pro softball, 7.0 is solid, 9.0 is very good, and 11.0+ is elite swing-and-miss stuff.

Good to know

  • "K" is the scorebook symbol for a strikeout; a backwards K means the batter struck out looking.
  • High K/7 pitchers rely less on their defense, which makes their results more repeatable.
